The American Heart Association has released a statement that having your teeth cleaned on a regular interval can ward off gum disease, but can also keep you from a heart attack and stroke.
Some studies have shown that there is a relationship between gum disease (Periodontitis) and heart disease. The exact mechanism between the two is unclear at this time. One theory states that bacteria that accumulate in the gums can enter the blood stream and form plaques in the vessels of the heart.
We shouldn’t be concerned with the exact mechanisms and more concerned with eliminating risk factors like gum disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, smoking, and obesity.
