The Journal of Periodontology released a preliminary study, which looked at 31 obese patients and how weight loss affected their periodontal health. Half of the patients had gastric bypass and the other half didn’t.
The half that had the gastric bypass lost weight, and an improvement in their gum health. They had a noted reduction in inflammation and improvement in clinical attachment levels.
This may be due to a reduction in blood sugar levels and changed levels in a hormone called leptin. Regardless of the exact mechanisms, it proves that the mouth is still attached to the rest of our bodies.
